Things to Do in Franconia Notch This Summer (And Where to Unwind After)

Franconia Notch is one of those places that rewards you for slowing down. The pass cuts through the heart of the White Mountains, framed by granite ridgelines, alpine lakes, and forest that turns every shade of green by July. And this summer, there’s a new reason to make it your base: Hideaway Inn Franconia Notch is now open.

Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, ridge views, or a swimming hole most people drive right past, here’s how to spend a summer weekend in the Notch, with a place to come back to at the end of the day.

Start with the Notch itself

Franconia Notch State Park is the obvious first stop, and for good reason. It packs several of the region’s best-known landmarks into a few walkable miles.

  • The Flume Gorge. A natural granite gorge with a boardwalk trail winding past 90-foot walls, moss, and rushing water. The full loop runs about two miles and is family-friendly. Go early on weekends; it fills up by late morning.
  • The Basin. A glacially carved granite pool fed by the Pemigewasset River, just off the bike path. Quick to reach, easy to love.
  • Echo Lake. A small alpine lake at the base of Cannon Mountain with a swimming beach, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and a straight-on view of the ridge. This is your low-effort, high-payoff afternoon.

Ride Cannon Mountain (no hiking required)

The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway carries you roughly 2,000 vertical feet to the summit in under ten minutes. At the top you’ll find a short summit loop, an observation tower, and views that stretch into Vermont, Maine, and Canada on a clear day. It’s the best panoramic view in the Notch without earning it on foot.

Nearby, stop at the Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza. The iconic granite profile collapsed in 2003, but the memorial site uses clever steel “profiler” markers that realign the vanished face against the cliff when you stand in the right spot. It’s a genuinely moving bit of design and a piece of New Hampshire history.

For hikers: earn the ridge

If you want the trip people write home about, the Franconia Ridge Loop (Falling Waters Trail up, Bridle Path down, over Little Haystack, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette) is one of the most celebrated day hikes in the Northeast. Roughly 8.5 miles with serious elevation and a long, exposed alpine ridgeline.

This is a real mountain day. Confidence, footwear, water, and an early start are non-negotiable, and weather on the ridge turns fast. Check the forecast, know your limits, and turn around if the sky does.

Prefer something gentler? The Franconia Notch Recreation Path is a paved 8-plus-mile trail running the length of the Notch, ideal for cycling or an easy walk past the Basin and along the river.

Cool off in the water

Summer in the mountains means swimming holes. Beyond Echo Lake, the Pemigewasset River has a string of pools and granite ledges scattered along its length. Bring water shoes, respect the current, and never jump into water you haven’t checked first.

Fuel up: a local breakfast worth the drive

A short hop from the Notch in Sugar Hill, Polly’s Pancake Parlor has been serving pancakes made from house-ground grains since the 1930s, with hillside views to match. It’s a regional institution and a perfect post-hike (or pre-hike) stop. Expect a wait on weekend mornings; it’s worth it.

Your home base in the White Mountains

After a full day on the trails, the last thing you want is a long drive back to your room. That’s the idea behind Hideaway Inn Franconia Notch: a place to unwind, minutes from the park, built around friction-free, contactless check-in so your arrival is as easy as the rest of your day should be.
